Budget Precision Rifle - In the short time since its introduction, the Ruger Precision Rifle (RPR) has established itself in the shooting industry. While there have been precision rifles in the same setup for years, it was the price point that made the Ruger unique; That's quite affordable compared to rifles that can easily cost more than $6,000. Ruger allowed more shooters to attend the precision rifle party - good for them!
While I applaud their efforts, marketing and innovation, I believe that with a little work, shooters can out-build and adjust their other rifles on the market to end up with a precision rifle that is just that. If not more, at least or. Same amount as RPR. Let's take a look at some budget rifles.

How does it shoot? This gun likes the 168 and 175 grain Sierra Match King (SMK), top target at 100 yards, bottom at 700. You will notice the occasional flitter, but the gun manages to maintain an average accuracy of around 1 MOA.
This rifle began life as a Remington 700 SPS Vermont. After the rifle cost just under $500 and shot 1/3 MOA at 500 yards. We decided to take it out a little more.

Put the targets on a roll, throw them in a bag and never be stuck without an accurate rifle target again! If a shooter were to ask me what caliber he should choose to start learning the art of long range shooting, I would tell him the 308 without a doubt. There are several reasons why I would choose that caliber. The first would be that Match Grade 308 is an inherently accurate round to 1000 yards that can be purchased off the shelf at a relatively low cost. Another reason is that the 308 is, in my opinion, the best round to learn the effects of weather and how they affect the projectile in flight. It is also called "external ballistics". There is no cheating with the 308. The shooter must be aware of all environmental conditions and be able to accurately estimate target range, wind direction and speed. This ability is an excellent learning tool. The third reason is that the 308 has relatively little resistance. This is important because if a shooter hits the back of the rifle, he is less likely to focus on the proper fundamentals of keeping a well-aimed shot and more likely to know that he is going to feel pain.
Remember, it's not about how sexy or expensive the sniper rifle is. The important thing is the shooter and what he can do with the rifle. I always laugh when I come across another shooter who uses a big rifle that costs $2.50 every time he pulls the trigger. Then I have my little old 308 that plays in the same steel as this and costs half the money. Now, I'm not saying that there aren't advantages to shooting a custom rifle that launches 220 grain bullets down range. What I am saying is that a sniper rifle is just a tool and the product that makes it is only as good as the craftsman who uses it. The most important aspect of precision shooting is learning the art. After mastering the basics, shooters can gain small advantages by upgrading their gear. The investment that always pays off the most for a shooter is learning the proper fundamentals of marksmanship. In short, it means that your money is better spent on training and ammo before all the billing of a sexy sniper rifle.
The first rifle I will introduce is what I like to call the budget rifle. It's not the sexiest rifle in the world, but it's still capable of delivering accurate rifle fire. It is also a reasonable investment compared to some other rifles and accessories that I will talk about in parts 2 and 3 of this article.
If a shooter is on a budget and wants to break into the sport, I would recommend the Remington 700 SPS Vermont. This rifle retails for $700.00. If you put in the effort and do some digging, you can find these used rifles for sale for $450.00. Most of them are like new, and some are even equipped with decent optics. I recommend the Remington 700 SPS for several reasons. Right out of the box the SPS Varmint is very accurate without any modifications. It is equipped with a decent stock and a heavy barrel. This rifle is capable of shooting under "MOA" groups with factory match ammo out of the stock chamber. The next reason is that the Remington 700 process is a strong and reliable process. It is also very easy to verify and modify. I don't know a custom rifle builder that doesn't work on Remington 700 actions. This is important because down the road if a shooter wants to start upgrading their rifle with custom parts like a new barrel, stock, trigger, etc... parts are readily available and there are plenty of guns ready to do the job. . There are rifles and actions on the market now that some custom rifle manufacturers will refuse to work with. The Remington 700 is usually not one of them. It's a solid investment that will grow with the shooter as he grows. The shooter can then customize the rifle to their liking as they become more proficient and learn what they want in a precision sniper.
