rare bear airplane

Rare Bear Airplane - The Bearcat that became Rare Bear was a badly damaged wreck found by Lyle Shelton in 1969. It had been left on the runway at the Porter County Regional Airport in Valparaiso, Indiana, after a crash there in 1962 in off the gas pedal. The plane had been destroyed by debris hunters, so Shelton found the fuselage, wing center section, landing gear and right wing, but nothing else. Shelton bought the ship and had the pieces shipped to Orange County, California and restoration began.

One of the major changes made during the rebuild was the installation of a more powerful Wright R-3350 (derived from the Douglas Skyraider) in place of the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine common to the Bearcat. A Douglas DC-7 propeller and canopy were used, and Shelton bought pictures and ship doors from the wreckage of Bob Kucera's Bearcat. Bill Fornoff lent him the left wing and Gunter Balz provided the duck. The windshield and awning were donated by Edward T. Maloney.

Just a week after its first flight, the Bearcat appeared in the first National Championship Ro Air Race, called "Able Cat", where it finished a respectable 5th in the unqualified category, despite the lack of preparation and flight test time. From 1969 to 1975, Lyle Shelton raced the plane (named "Phoix I" from 1971) every year in the Ro Air Races, as well as air races in Mojave, California, San Diego, California, Miami , Florida, and Cape May. New Jersey. During this period he achieved five victories.

During the 1976 Mojave, California air race, Shelton suffered engine failure and had to land on his stomach.

The plane did not run again until 1980, when it was renamed "Rare Bear". From 1980 to today, Rare Bear has won more and more victories in the Unlimited Class.

A three-bladed propeller, made from blades from the Lockheed P-3 Orion propeller, instead of the Lockheed Constellation hub, was installed on the aircraft in 1988.

At the end of 2006, the planes and the team were sold to Rod Lewis for less than $2 million.

Recent achievements include winning the 2004 and 2005 Ro Air Races with gold medals in the unlimited gold race. The pilot of those two competitions was John Pney. In 2006, Rare Bear was tested by Ron Buccarelli.

For the 2007 Ro Air Races, Rare Bear appeared in a new livery (burgundy hull, white wings, gold tail).

Propeller issues during qualifying resulted in an overnight propeller build. The plane was able to qualify and John Pney made it to the Unlimited Breitling Gold race. A problem with the landing gear during the qualifying race caused the engine to overheat. A few high G drops allowed the gear to expand, but the gin damage was done. Racing officials said from their box above the podium that it was only a matter of time before the engine was released. He was in second place when he had to call Mayday again during the Gold Race, this time with smoke. When Pney got off safely, it was unknown how much damage Rare Bear had done.

For the 2009 race, the wing-mounted coolers were replaced by an oil-cooled system. This closed the outer parts of the two rooting wings.

In the 2010 races, Rare Bear finished second in Gold Heat 3A at 447.755 mph (720.6 km/h). The Gold Final race was canceled due to weather conditions.

The aircraft never raced after finishing second in 2015, but was on display at the 2016 and 2017 evts.

Rare Bear set many piston engine aviation performance records, including the 3 km world speed record of 528.33 mph (850.26 km/h) set on August 21, 1989, which still stands in the class, and a new climbing time record (3,000 meters). in 91.9 seconds set in 1972 (9842.4 ft - 6,426 fpm), breaking the 1946 stock Bearcat record.

I don't understand why they had a different way to use the aileron servo on the same two models

Maybe from different companies. Note that companies like Volantex, Rage, Top Race and Bang Good's Eachine brand buy these from the manufacturer and stick their different names on the exact same faces.

Made two flights/batteries today with the F8F with a total flight time of 15 minutes. Sunny, 50* with gusts up to 8 mph. I had 2 collisions with trees. Twice the prop exploded. The last time I lost a wound. That ended the flight with the F8F. I also flew my Earline T-28 back to back for the same air condition comparison.

The F8F is almost square in terms of gyro. I haven't tried flying without gyro mode yet. I started full throttle, when I used the ailerons to turn the nose would come up and out. At first I thought it was a ghost, but it did that every time I kicked it with my hand. After getting on and off the throttle, it wasn't that extreme. It doesn't become too stiff with just the ailerons. It didn't want to fly flat. The elevator is connected to the throttle in the form of a gyro, so deceleration is difficult. During the shift, you really have to stay on top of it. I flew it in the landing gear without flying it and it flew the same. It looks better when you fly your gear up. Once I get a new prop on it, I'll try flying it without the gyro. I'm thinking of doing an Eachine rx version of it. Each rx and Eachine transmitter both seem to be high. Good F8F airframe with internal aileron servo and mounted hitches. The battery compartment provides enough space. I might even add a little foam to prevent the battery from moving. The fit and finish is the same or maybe even better than Eachine. Overall, Eachine Corsair and Trojan are better planes for the same amount of money. I love seaplanes so the F8F was a must have and I love the Rare Bear livery. I want to get one to paint in military colors. It flies, but it's a handful compared to Eachine's planes.

So far Xk is 0 for 3 with their radios (A160, A220, A260). They should renew them as PNP equipment.

I've always had a special place in my heart for that underdog racing team. RIP Lyle. Your bear is showing them how to do it:

I would like to know what the protocol is as these planes need to be fine tuned without gyro and balance.

It should be the same as XK-A220 (P-40), ie V911s/E119. Hpnuts recently made a change for the 3D/6G switch, which is being tested:

Are there other parts available for these XK planes? I want to return my lost spinner. The Rare Bear spinner appears to be similar to the XK P-40 spinner. If someone with an XK P-40 doesn't use a spinner, I'll buy one from you.
